This course provides coverage of standard materials, processes, procedures, equipment and techniques used in industry for metals and alloys, non-metals including polymers ceramics and composite materials. Manufacturing methods, problem solving, quality techniques and cost analysis will also be covered along with manufacturing plant tours and demonstration tours by the welding, machining and plastics/composite departments at Cerritos College.

This survey course is a brief study of ISO 9000: 2002, Quality Management Systems – Fundamentals and Vocabulary, ISO 9001:2002, Quality Management Systems – Requirements, and ISO 9004: 2002 – Guidelines for Performance Improvement. The treatment of these quality standards established by the International Standards Organization (ISO), as they are applied to the manufacturing industry, include discussion of differences of the 1994 Standards as they relate to changes from a “system based” to a more “process based” management approach and a fully auditable Quality Management System (QMS). Materials covered will include “Elements of a Quality Management System” and selected references on the topic as applied to individual organizations. Special emphasis will be placed on the advantages of implementing an ISO 9000 Quality System in an industrial manufacturing environment.

This survey course is for those interested in learning about Benchmarking as a strategic tool in manufacturing environment for continuous quality improvement. Topics will include a definition of Benchmarking, resources available to help in the manufacturing Benchmarking process, case studies and examples of companies that have used Benchmarking methods in production.

This course provides students with background knowledge in the operation of basic ultrasonic testing equipment. Skill development required in understanding and operating basis ultrasonic testing equipment for the inspection of composite and metallic components is emphasized.

This survey couse examines the nature and application in manufacturing of Total Quality Management (TQM) in today's competitive environment. Students will be introduced to basic concepts of quality and why its philosophy of continuous improvement will provide the framework for production systems. The "team" approach to all facets in quality of production within industry is examined.
