This is a course in fiberglass/composites manufacturing technology. Areas of concentration include the processes and techniques of fiberglass composites as applied in industry. This course will place the student in production situations similar to those encountered in industry. The student may also have an opportunity to construct a project of his or her own with the instructor approval.

This course provides students with “hands-on” exposure to composites structural repair techniques. Areas of emphasis include structural and nonstructural (cosmetic) evaluation, material handling, surface preparation, and common types of damages encountered within the composite industry.

This lab course is to compliment other courses in the Plastics/Composite curriculum. It is designed to give practical experience in working with plastics and fiberglass materials.

FIBERGLASS TECHNOLOGY- PMT 61 ( 2.5 Units ) 18 Weeks
Classes begin Monday, August 16, 2010

This is a course in the industrial use of fiberglass resins, cloth, mat and composite materials. The care and use of equipment (fiberglass chopper gun, gel-coat spray gun) is stressed. Other areas explored are mold laminating, repair, and proper use of resins and fillers. Mixing of resins and safety procedures are emphasized.

This course provides students with theory and “hands-on” exposure to fabrication methods with "high tech" materials. Areas of concentration will include composite structures, material choices, design of composite structures, surface bonding, fastener installation, inspection processes and approved repair methods. Fabrication, safety procedures, and material handling are also covered.

This course will provide students with the basic information and "hands-on" fabrication needed to shape, paint, and glass a surfboard, bellyboard or skimboard. The course will discuss various board designs, blank selection, shaping and painting techniques. Also covered are resin selection, fiberglass hand lay-up techniques and safety procedures.

VACUUM INFUSION (VIP)/RESIN TRANSFER (RTM)-PMT 76 (3.0 Units) 18 Weeks
Class begins Friday, August 20, 2010

This course is designed for individuals in the field of fiberglass/composites tooling. The class will include a mix of lecture/demonstration with "hands-on" the Vacuum Infusion Process (VIP) and Resin Transfer Molding (RTM) lab moldmaking and production techniques. Emphasis will be on converting parts currently being made by the hand lay-up method, to the closed mold VIP & "Light" RTM process. Topics will include equipment needs, mold design and fabrication, resin and catalyst selection, reinforcement seletion, core materials, high output production methods and troubleshooting.

The blanks selected for this class are preshaped.
